Caring for your lawn from Fall Leaves

Oct. 2018 By the Landscape experts

When Autumn comes and the leaves begin to drop, its important to know the effects fallen leaves can have to your lawn.

Leaves can act as a barrier to your lawn, blocking the sunlight and impact the potential growth and health of your lawn.

To prevent this, consider raking up the first fall of those heavy leaves from your lawn. You can also use the autumn leaves for composting and adding a small layer of them to your lawn providing some natural nutrient to your soil.

Season Checklist

  • Fertilize

One of the most important time of year to fertilize your lawn is in the fall, while the temperatures begin to cool. Fertilizing not only produces growth for your grass but also can protect your lawn keeping it healthy for the next season.

  • Seed

Give your lawn a head start for the spring time by laying some seed on your lawn.  Depending on the climates your live you may need to begin germinating in the fall or if its too cold out you may need to wait until the soil is thawed from the winter freeze.

  • Water

Even though the hot summer days have begin to diminish, keep watering. Provide a good amount of water around the bases of trees, plants and any shrubs. The fall is a crucial time to continue watering your lawn as the rains are only sparingly.

  •  Misc.

Bring any sensitive outdoor plants indoors once temperatures begin to fall below 50 degrees F. For plants such as citrus or boxwood, be sure to cover as their leaves tend to lose moisture in the cold temperatures.

Fall Lawn Fertilizer

As the weather changes it is important to fertilizer your lawn before the first winter freeze. Many people say that the fall fertilizer timing is the most important application of the year as your lawn is both repairing itself from a long hot summer and preparing and storing nutrients for next spring. Apply a fertilizer that includes nitrogen and potassium, the nutrients will be stored in plant to ensure vibrant growth in the spring. October and November are the best months to apply your fall fertilizer, just make sure your application is done a few weeks prior to the first winter freeze. A great product to use is Scotts Turf Builder Winterguard Fall Lawn Food as it holds a 32-0-10 analysis (32% nitrogen, 10% Potassium). Always apply at label rates and specification.
